چکیده

Application of the NEP technique provides a simple, rapid, non-invasive, and reliable test to detect tidal expiratory flow limitation; b) it does not require a body-box or cooperation on the patient’s part; c) it can be applied in any posture, during mechanical ventilation, and during exercise; d) it provides new insights into the physiology and pathophysiology of sev‐ eral diseases and the symptom of dyspnea.

Evidence for expiratory flow limitation of extrathoracic origin in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea.

BACKGROUND A study was undertaken to examine the expiratory flow response to a negative pressure (NEP) applied at the airway in patients with no abnormalities of the intrathoracic airway but suffering from the obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS). METHODS Nineteen patients with OSAS with normal spirometric values were studied. NEP of -5 cm H(2)O and -10 cm H(2)O was applied to the mouth w...

Flow-limitation and upper airways.

We read with interest in the February 1995 issue of The European Respiratory Journal the article by KOULOURIS et al. [1] "A simple method to detect expiratory flowlimitation during spontaneous breathing". The authors applied negative pressure at the mouth (-5 cmH2O) during a tidal expiration (NEP) to 22 patients with chronic obstructive lung disease. They conclude that this provides a simple, n...

Physiological techniques for detecting expiratory flow limitation during tidal breathing.

Patients with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) often exhale along the same flow-volume curve during quiet breathing as they do during the forced expiratory vital capacity manoeuvre, and this has been taken as an indicator of expiratory flow limitation at rest (EFL(T)). Therefore, EFL(T), namely attainment of maximal expiratory flow during tidal expiration, occurs when an incr...

Expiratory flow limitation detected by forced oscillation and negative expiratory pressure.

The within-breath change in reactance (Delta(rs)) measured by forced oscillation technique (FOT) at 5 Hz reliably detects expiratory flow limitation in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The present study compared this approach to the standard negative expiratory pressure (NEP) method. In total, 21 COPD patients were studied by applying both techniques to the same breath and in 15 pa...

Do CHF patients align with COPD patients during exercise?

Accessible online at: www.karger.com/res ‘Flow limitation’ is an expression classically used to indicate that there is a reduction in the maximal expiratory flows that may be attained during the forced vital capacity (FVC) maneuver. It is measured from the ratio FEV1/VC, which dates back to Tiffeneau, where FEV1 is the forced expiratory volume in the first second and VC is the slow expiratory v...
